Shadow of the tide

Reuse of the tower of Curon

23rd October 1950 | Ponton equals the shadow of the flooding day

Lago di Resia (Lake Resia) is a large reservoir located in the alpine region of South Tyrol, northern Italy. The lake is known for its iconic, partially submerged tower, which rises from the water’s surface. This landmark is all that remains of the village of Curon (or Graun), which, along with part of the neighboring village of Resia, was flooded on the 23rd October 1950 after the construction of a dam wall. The damming of the valley was intended to create the reservoir for hydroelectric power generation, but it resulted in the destruction of the historic locality. Today, the steeple stands as a poignant symbol of the past and has become a popular historical and cultural landmark.

SUMMERTIME
MORNING DEW
The story begins to the east.
A pontoon floats at the foot of the tower and, like a sundial, depicts the 13pm shadow of October 23rd 1950 at medium water level, the day Alt Graun was flooded.
You can pull yourself across on a wooden raft using a cable. In Summer, this is a wonderful place to linger. A café window in the base of the tower offers Affugato and other simple delicacies.
The water laps at your feet. Take a book and grab a cosy deckchair.
TIDES OF TIME
The floating dock adapts to the different water levels, perfect for sipping an espresso by the water. The higher the water level, the smaller the slot and Café window becomes.

WINTERMAGIC
EVENING TWILIGHT
When the day draws to a close, we head in the other direction. To the west, barely visible from land, high up in the tower, a hideaway. Not elitist, but exclusive for anyone who is quick enough and determined to secure a reservation.

Here you can dine with your friends on the floor where the bell used to hang behind the beautiful pillared windows and then end the day in the evening twilight. One side of the towers roof pyramid is fully glazed and offers a panoramic view. Lying between the tower beams with your partner in the Celestial vantage overviewing the lake into the vastness of the mountains.

ARTE POVERA
The whole concept is intended to be pure, simple and minimal. Strip down life to its raw elemental forms, focusing on natural processes and the passage of time.
The use of humble materials is intended, furnishings are minimalist and low-tech.
A floating kitchen on the ponton’s level, spartan and only intended for raw, pure and simple catering. On this kiosk-like level you will find filtered water, which is brought up via the rope lift.
The gourmet floor is equipped with a stove to make your tea. A pot and a bowl of water are ready for you.
In the roof between the wooden beams you lie snuggled up in warm down and and in the dim light of the candle chandelier.
Below the dining level is a simple storage level with an integrated composting toilet.
The power supply is provided by filigree solar pergolas above the parking spaces on land.
