Conversion of an event Hall from the into a school centre

The continuity of history in the municipality of Evionnaz, reflecting social life, where young people learn from their elders and where youth inspires previous generations, dialogue between existing and new buildings is established naturally. The village street of Evionnaz, which developed organically, is characterised by a dense succession of dwellings that define the urban space. However, this linear structure develops in the centre along a transverse axis, creating a connecting space between the church and the former presbytery to the west, descending the slope to the community centre and the multi-purpose hall.
In order to confirm this spatial composition, the new building is integrated to the south of the existing hall, extending the cultural axis. It is clearly attached to it, allowing the new spaces to blend harmoniously with the existing hall, thus creating spatial and programmatic cohesion. The result is a synergistic dialogue, both structural and functional. The minimal dismantling of the annexes to the west of the hall makes it possible to create a permeable façade, which echoes the community centre, establishing a new visual and symbolic link. Although the hall currently fulfils its function effectively, it nevertheless isolates the rear of the village, transforming this area into an inhospitable asphalt expanse dedicated mainly to vehicle parking. This obscures the potential of a large flat surface, which is rare in the fabric of this village.
For ethical reasons and out of a sense of responsibility towards future generations, complete demolition is out of the question. A slight reshaping of the existing structure, combined with a precise adjustment of the terrain, will allow the northern surface to be reconnected in a simple and effective manner, creating a continuous flow of outdoor facilities in Evionnaz.

Cultural clearing. Village scene. School meadow. Rectory garden. The historical cultural axis becomes the cultural heart and reinforces the village’s identity. The concept generates a diversity of outdoor spaces with varied qualities and identities. The green and intimate Cure garden, located between the church and the reception building, becomes an intergenerational meeting and exchange place, where older and younger people can share stories. This garden opens directly onto the central square. Village stage It is followed by a new space born out of dialogue between the school and the municipality, offering a playground for all generations. The new west-facing outdoor stage allows for the organisation of various events and performances. The bleachers, a place for gathering, meeting and communication, face the stage. The former civil defence shelter has been transformed into a playful, colourful and immersive installation – a kind of accessible ‘pop candy’ designed as an adventure playground. The school meadow To the north, the space extends towards the new school meadow, vast and open like a field, offering great potential for sports and festive activities. The large hall can be opened up to this space to welcome the public. Thus, the heart of the village is transformed into a pedestrian zone. Car traffic and logistics are being moved to peripheral areas. Bus stop 220 is planned nearby, as well as a drop-off zone that can accommodate two school buses.

The project is based on a sensitive interpretation of the context and integrates the new volume into the continuity of the existing hall to the south. This addition creates spatial, structural and functional synergies. The intervention generates a new, assertive identity without disruption and creates a clear articulation in the built fabric, while reinforcing the existing cross-cultural axis. By forming a cohesive whole, the two buildings gain seismic stability thanks to a shared structural framework and targeted reinforcements. The new building aligns with the structure of the large hall, opens onto it and reveals the roof as a unique and exclusive break area. Inside, a bright central core, traversed by voids and zenithal light sources, connects the floors in a fluid manner. Around this core are bright, well-oriented classrooms – an open, structured and inspiring learning environment. The roof echoes the architectural language of the site, characterised by a distinctive topography and dancing roofs with varying pitches. The existing building has two levels, allowing for the natural integration of two standard floors. However, the roof level stands out as a unique floor, offering bright, lively and generously high spaces that open onto an exceptional school courtyard. Learning concept: The attic offers great potential for very different innovative learning concepts. In collaboration with the municipality of Evionnaz and educators, it is possible to imagine and develop new learning spaces, quiet study areas, and ‘whisper rooms’ to complement discussion forums. In the best-case scenario, a successful concept will emerge.
